From this standpoint in the Hermitage one could have been an eye witness to the suppression of the Decembrist Revolution ( led by aristocrats, officers and academics) some of whom the Tsar had hanged and others exiled to siberia.Also a first class position from which to see the storming of the winter Palace in 1917 which started the communist revolution.
