GATEWAY TO CHINA

View across the Amur River towards the Chinese border.Farewell to Khabarovsk my favourite siberian town.

Twelve hour overnight trip from Khabarovsk to Vlad. Classier, newer train than last one-served a meal of sorts-scraggy chicken and rice. The Provanista's(carriage attendant-she who must be obeyed) taste in pop was driving me and my three lady companions crazy until a feisty businesswoman disabled the speaker and then attacked her dell computer with gusto. Pop music at full blast seems to be considered a symbol of modernity-I really hate the singing budgie!!

In the brief spell of daylight-yet more birch trees as we travelled south, parallel with the Pacific coast. It looked so benign but this is Siberian tiger country with more than the odd brown bear (A competent human killer) No bushwalking here.
