Pergamum ( Bergama)

The commanding mountain top site of Pergamum from the contemporary streets of Bergama
on a Sunday morning, as men stroll the streets after the mosque, bartering the best price for lunch at local cafes. Had excellent Turkish pizza and tea at one for all of £2
The road up to The Acropolis is steep and mostly without guard rails ( No health and safety executive here). But Motorhome gears and brakes proved up to the task.

The Acropolis-Pergamum

Temple of Trajan is best preserved building although much of its architectural treasure was removed to Germany by 19th century archeologists. This is a Roman site developed in the reigns of Trajan and Hadrian ( whose wall I will vist soon on my UK motorhome tour)

This magnificent theatre which seated 10000 people is exceptionally steeply cut into the hill side, which was necessary to get it onto a tight block. When I descended the steps with trembling thigh muscles I appreciated the significance of my fitness adviser at the Richmond gym's advice, that balance exercises are vital to those of advanced years-Good onyer Andrew! get the swiss balls ready for my return.

One false step and you are into paragliding without a parachute-personal responsibility and accountability are alive in Turkey!! So let them into Europe. After all they got to the gates of Budapest and Vienna ( in 1688) and were only thwarted by the timely arrival of Jan Sobiesky and his army of Polish plumbers and bus drivers.
