As Eastern Siberia's governor,he founded Khabarovsk in 1858 as a military post during his campaign to take the Amur river back from the Manchus.In 1969 Chinese and Soviet troops fought a bloody hand to hand battle over Damansky island on the ussuri river.Khabarovsk today comprises 80% Russian speakers with an ethnic minority of Nanai people.
