PETERHOF PALACE

Peterhof palace was built by Peter the Great between 1714-1721 in an act of triumphalism to mark his great victory in the Northern wars which broke the power of the Swedes (and Finns) and consolidated Russia's Baltic window on the west.
I was fortunate to choose the approach by Hydrofoil from the pier opposite the Hermitage.
Peterhof park is very extensive and includes as well as the main palace a series of smaller houses including the famous hunting lodge-Mon Plaisir. His hospitality was so overwhelming that guests were found wandering the grounds, still in drunken stupours, on the mornings after torrid nights of trying to keep up with the Tsar.
They were then offered a tankard of brandy as a "heart starter".
